Identity Theft Forum to Reveal Best Practices for Financial Services Industry

NEW YORK, April 14 /PRNewswire/ -- In the minds of consumer advocacy groups, regulators and legislators, identity theft and account takeover has become one of the dominant concerns for the financial services industry. Banks and credit card companies have much to gain by taking the lead in the development of law and policy relating to identity theft, as they collectively bear the greatest financial burdens resulting from this type of fraud.
In response to this rapidly growing industry need, Strategic Research Institute presents Identity Theft in Financial Services (www.srinstitute.com/cg115), which will be held June 30 - July 1 at the Metropolitan in New York City.

Major banks and credit card companies will discuss policy, government/commercial cooperation, best practices, and technology solutions with top industry regulators and organizations.

For complete conference details and to register, please visit www.srinstitute.com/cg115 or call (888) 666-8514.

For further information, contact (212) 967-0095, ext. 255.

Most people are unaware of how common this problem is, and it's getting worse each year. Don't let thieves take everything you own, including your good credit record! I've seen it happen and it's not pretty.

This horrible crime is becomming America's gastest growing crime problem! We really have to be aware of the ¨Online Thieves¨. Its is also important to remind that Identity theft happens both online and offline. One of the ways that identity thieves collect personal and financial information about members of the public offline (carelessly discarded trash). Many people throw bank statements, utility bills and other potentially sensitive documentation away without shredding it first.

Good Luck and be Safe

Identity theft is sub-divided into five categories by Identity Theft Resource Center:

• Business/commercial identity theft - obtain credit by using different business name
• Criminal identity theft - pretend as a different person when detained for a crime
• Financial identity theft - Obtain goods, services, and credit using another's identity
• Identity cloning - using information of a person in daily life to assume his or her identity
• Medical identity theft - Get medical care or drugs using another's identity

Identity theft may be used to aid other offenses including illegal immigration, terrorism, and espionage. Online credit card processing and medical insurance systems have come under identity cloning attacks. Identity thieves impersonate others for non-financial reasons—for instance, to receive praise or attention for the victim's achievements.

Kind of funny how many ID theft companies spammed these blog comments when these type of companies are supposed to be the most trusted in helping you prevent and protect yourself from identity theft.

Anyways I think more businesses especially in finance need to be trained on how to prevent identity theft from happening to their clients. There are so many firms who will just throw away documents in the trash without shredding. They don't realize their business is one of the main places where dumpster diver thieves find the information they need. A simple shredder can prevent your company from catching a lawsuit from this and also protect you from identity theft.

Here's where we're at for ID theft prevention:

-On May 24th, 2009 US Federal Court declared that the credit freezing services provided by Lifelock, Debix and all other credit freezing services were illegal. Their services have been rendered to a simple insurance policy, which is useless in preventing ID Theft.

-Most other services are the insurance services mentioned above, so where are the services that actually prevent ID Theft?

Above all else I'd recommend everyone on here to follow the latest news, solutions and advice to help protect themselves. Twitter is a good resources for this!:
